In order to fully achieve a ‘Smarter Philippines’, more scientists and engineers need to be on the same page with government goals.
This was the message that Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo addressed to the qualifiers for this year’s undergraduate scholarship programs of the science agency.
In the presentation of the new scholars of the DOST – Science Education Institute, Montejo reminded students of the critical role of science professionals in economic development through constant technology development and innovation.
The Department of Science and Technology through the Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), continues its mission of producing and developing future Filipino scientists and engineers as it announces the 3,597 high school students who qualify as DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholars starting School Year 2013-2014. This is 7.1% higher than the 3,359 number of qualifiers last year. Moreover, the number of municipalities with qualifiers also increased to 1,107 this year compared to 975 in 2012.
From the total number of the 2013 passers, 3,089 belong to economically disadvantaged families who qualified under the RA 7687 Scholarship grants, while 508 students who topped the examination qualified under the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program.
Once again, the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) is in search for the most novel practices in teaching science and mathematics among schools with large and extra large classes.
Dubbed the “Search for Innovative Practices in Managing Large Classes for Effective Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics,” SEI will award two winning schools with the most inventive instructional practices with P100,000 and a plaque of recognition to help them improve further their large class teaching practices. The search is open for public and private secondary schools nationwide with class sizes of more than 50 students in any grade from 7 to 10.
For the first time in its four-year run, the Science Explorer, the country’s first mobile science learning facility crossed the sea to reach Oriental Mindoro and bring its signature ‘cool science learning experience’ to students and young indigenous people.
Aiming to widen its impact, the Science Education Institute’s (SEI) Science Explorer traveled more than 10 hours to reach the municipality of Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro where 540 young Mindoreños from 15 public elementary and high schools got a dose of exciting hands-on learning.
The students in the community experience the fun of exploring robotics, water filtration, science creativity, weather, fun mathematics, and water rocket making (physics).
